Segway FAQ

Some common questions often arise and we’ve compiled them into one, easy-to-read section. Everything from proper Segway etiquette to where to park when you take a tour with us is addressed here. If you want to have an excellent experience with us (with no surprises) please read this entire section. Should you have have further questions,  feel free to call us. Before you begin, Segway says you must watch this SEGWAY SAFETY VIDEO.

What is a Segway?

A Segway is a two-wheeled, self-balancing transportation device designed to go wherever people go.  It is easy to learn to operate because of its technologically advanced design that senses your body movements. Lean forward, go forward. Stand straight and stop. To increase speed, you lean forward a little harder. To slow down, you lean back. You’re always in control of the Segway. The comfortable platform for your feet and adjustable handlebar height make the process of gliding along second nature and an experience you’re sure to enjoy.

Can anyone ride one?

Are they easy to ride?

Segway PTs are remarkably easy to master, however we do require that riders be at least 16 years old (14 with parent or guardian) and weigh no more than 260 pounds. Riders must be able to perform such tasks as going up and down stairs (on foot)  without assistance, and without using a handrail. You must be able to operate the steering control with your left hand and be able to stand on the Segway’s platform for the length of the tour you choose (times may vary and we certainly can take a break). A comprehensive training and practice session is required prior to each tour.

Our requirements are fairly straight-forward and exist for your safety.

  • Recommend at least 16 years of age and must bring proof of valid drivers license, unless accompanied by parent or guardian
  • Guests are encouraged to wear comfortable, closed-toe athletic shoes. Absolutely no heels, flip flops of any kind.  We also do not permit the curved soled exercise shoes. Please wear sneakers.
  • Helmets are required and will be provided free of charge. You may bring your own helmet.
  • You must be at least 54″ tall. Please call with questions about weight.
  • Must be able to maintain lateral, side-to-side balance.
  • Must be able to safely step on and off the Segway without assistance. This is similar to ascending and descending stairs without having to use a railing.
  • Must be able to comply with all instructions and warnings.
  • Must meet Segway operator requirements for the machine.
  • Must sign release form.

How fast do they go?

Most of the time,  the tours travel around 5 mph, (a little faster than a brisk walk), allowing people to see more of the tour in less time. Our tour guides will set the pace as you progress through the tour. The Segway unit itself can travel up to 12 miles an hour.

Where do we park?

Ybor City Parking: Always arrange parking with us. If you are planning to take a Segway tour in Ybor City, then please be aware that there is no “free” parking anywhere. Most of the parking lots charge $10 and even up to $20 for special event days and some of the more nefarious parking companies only allow parking until 6PM and then you’ll get charged again. (They’ll tell you to read the fine print on the sign) When you park with us, the fee is a flat-rate $5 for the entire day and evening. We suggest purchasing our parking passes in advance when you book your tour on our website, but our parking can be paid the day you arrive, just make sure to arrive at LEAST 30 minutes before your tour time if you have not purchased our parking pass in advance. Our parking lot is in a public place and outside. Is it safe? The answer is, “this is where we park our own cars.”  Our online booking service will send you a parking pass that you’ll need to print and put on your dashboard before locking your vehicle. The passes are dated, so please only use this pass only for the day of your tour. When you book your tour, an address and a map will be e-mailed to you so you can get to our parking lot. Please do not park on the street. Street parking in Ybor City is only available for 2 hours and your experience with us will take more than 2 hours.  Remember, at all Segway tour locations, you will need to arrive at the Segway Launch Pad at least 20 minutes BEFORE your scheduled time. Please plan accordingly. EGT, it’s owners and employees are not responsible if you receive a citation. We are not responsible for items lost or stolen from your vehicle. We are not responsible for traffic, trains, pedestrians or anything else that could delay your arrival. Always drive responsibly and allow enough time to arrive. Please park responsibly.

Hillsborough River State Park: There is a $6 per car (up to 8 people) entry fee which is good for the whole day. You may park anywhere there are designated parking lots, but the lot closest to the tour will be Parking lot #4 just across from the Poolside Cafe.

Two Rivers, Wisconsin: The city has few restrictions on parking. Please follow all posted signs. For the Walsh Field Segway Tour Launch, feel free to park anywhere in the Walsh Field parking lot, avoiding any orange/yellow or red cones. For special event parking, please follow all signs and always park appropriately.

What is a “Segway Launch Pad?”

This is our term for the location from which your tour begins. Some locations have a tour office, a brick and mortar building. Other locations (on-site events) may have a mobile setup with a truck & trailer. All locations are clearly marked with appropriate signage and all tour confirmation tickets are provided with an address for GPS navigation.

Is a birthday tour really free?

Yes. Book your tour online with at least (1) other guest and your tour is absolutely free. When you arrive for the tour, show valid ID indicating it’s your birthday and your ticket will be refunded. Some restrictions apply. No other coupon or discount can be combined with this offer. Based on availability. Please call for more details.

What is your cancellation policy?

Electric Glide Tours requires 48 hours or more notice for Standard Tour cancellations and tour rescheduling.  (See below for special vouchers) If you fail to show up for a reserved/scheduled tour or fail to give 48 hours notice of cancellation you will be subject to a re-schedule/cancellation fee of $20 per ticket.  Custom Tours, Special Events and Private Events can not be canceled, nor do we refund any portion of any ticket if one or more of your guests do not show up for the event or does not participate in the tour. We have gone to great lengths (and costs) to provide a safe and fun experience for your large group and have transported machines, added additional staff for these events as well as additional prep time and post-tour arrangements. It is imperative that you have a conversation with all of your guests PRIOR to booking your tour experience with us. If for any reason, anyone in your group is hesitant and may decide not to participate in the Segway tour event, you must book your group accordingly.  If we have arranged for catering, food, cigars or special additions to the Segway tour experience, surcharges can apply to cancellations or modifications to your original booking. We understand that life sometimes gets in the way, so we will do our best to accommodate your needs.

Are helmets required to ride?

Yes, they are. After all, it is a machine and as amazingly well designed as they are, there is always the human error factor. We want you to enjoy your experience and be as safe as possible, so we do require you to wear a helmet…and we provide them FREE to our tour guests!

Why do we have to fill out a release form?

This is a stipulation of our insurance company. The information provided by you is not rented, sold or shared with anyone at any time. The address you provide is ONLY for identification purposes. We will not send you anything in the mail. Providing an e-mail address only ensures you will receive your FREE photos. We send out about one e-mail per year to let you know about any specials or any upcoming events. You will not be added to a mailing list. If you choose not to provide your e-mail address, you will not receive an e-mail with your free photos.

Are Segways safe?

With anything in life, there is risk. In the case of taking a Segway tour, there are many factors which contribute to the safety of your experience with us. We do our best to train you and it is imperative that you understand that you are ultimately responsible for riding these machines. We do provide instruction free of charge and everyone is trained to best of our abilities. It is up to each guest to use his or her best judgement when participating in any of our tours. There is a risk of injury and even death. Don’t let this frighten you though. You run the risk of death every time you cross a street, even on foot. Riding a Segway is no less safe than riding a bicycle, but when you factor-in human error, people sometimes do things that are unwise and/or unsafe. As with most things in life, it is the human element that makes things unsafe. Every rider must watch this SAFETY VIDEO before taking a tour to fully understand the risks and the enjoyment in riding a Segway PT.

How do they work?

The Segway utilizes a process of dynamic stabilization which balances the rider. This means, the Segway senses the rider’s center of gravity 100 times a second; this information is processed and used to reliably balance the Segway and rider.  As the rider leans forward, the center of gravity moves forward and the Segway responds by traveling forward.  The same applies for going backward. If the center of gravity is directly over the standing platform the Segway will remain stationary. You don’t need to be an acrobat or even incredibly agile — the Segway does all the work!

Do you handle large groups?

We sure do! We take groups of virtually any size. On any given tour day, we have the availability to accommodate up to 16 tour guests. Groups of over 8 require an additional Segway Tour Specialist. Larger groups cannot be booked online. Please call 800-975-3177.  We call these larger groups “Custom Segway Tours.” We bring in additional machines from other locations to accommodate large parties and we add Segway Tour Specialists based on the number of guests in your party.  We can also add fun things to your experience like wine tasting events, lunches, dinners, cigars, museum visits, etc. If your group is more than 20 people, in some cases we can split the group into smaller numbers and have one group doing one activity while the other group is on the Segway tour. We’ve set every record in Tampa Bay for large parties, so if your group (corporate or private) is ready for a truly unique experience, call us for more details. Please read through the rest of this page if you have a large group and familiarize yourself with your policies. Our first goal is safety and our second goal is fun! So get your group, pick some potential dates and give us a call! 800-975-3177

Why do you have add-ons?

Why not just have a package deal?

We developed the add-on system because not every group or party wants the same things. You may add things to the tour to create your own unique package. With some exceptions, the Segway portion of the experience is the same. What you add-on is your choice. Cigars, Wine Tasting Experiences, Lunches or Dinners all are provided by our partners. Remember gratuities are not included with any of our packages. Please remember to appreciate the hard-working people of Ybor City who offer great service.

What about minors?

All our tours featuring the Segway PT are designed for people of ages about 12 and up. Some off our add-ons are for adults. For a wine tasting experience, you must be 21 or over. Minors must be accompanied by adults and can still enjoy the Segway tour as well as accompany their parent or guardian to the wine room. It’s a public place and the proprietors will have alcohol-free options for the kiddos or adults who simply wish to refrain from alcohol. We still recommend the meats, cheeses, fruits, nuts and chocolates!

Minors on the cigar tour?

The cigar tour is designed as an educational experience. All of the cigar shops are public establishments and children under the age of 18 can enter these places. Anyone under the age of 18 will not come in contact with tobacco or tobacco-related products. Anyone under the age of 18 must be accompanied by their parent or guardian to be included on this tour. The parent or guardian is responsible for the minor for the duration of the tour experience.

Can I ride if I’m pregnant?

Unfortunately no but congratulations on your pregnancy! Safety guidelines are strict in this area. We do not allow pregnant women to ride on our machines. Please see us after your baby is born, but get a sitter. You also may not carry a baby with you on a Segway PT. One rider per machine.

Do you really offer FREE photos?

We sure do! Our photos are free of charge. All you have to do is LIKE our Facebook page. We will upload your photos to FB a few days following your tour date. From there, you can download and share your photos as you wish. Number of photos may vary, but typically there can be between 8 and 15 photos on any tour.

May I bring my own camera?

You may bring your own camera but you may not use it on the tour. No eating, drinking, smoking or cell phone use of any kind is allowed on the tour. If you’re planning on staying in the historic disctrict before or after your tour, then please bring your camera. There are many great photo opps in Ybor City.

What about my cell phone camera?

Again, no. We need your complete attention when you take a tour with us and that includes BOTH hands on the handlebar. If the machine you’re using is parked appropriately and you are off the machine, you may use your cell phone. There is a break half-way on the tour, so you may use your cell phone then. If you have to take an emergency phone call, the tour guide will stop the tour until you’ve completed your call and your phone is safely stowed. Please be courteous with people who are not part of your group. They are here to enjoy the tour as well and stopping for cell phone use is not adding to the fun of the tour.

May I bring my GoPro camera?

You may use a GoPro or other “sport” style camera under the following conditions: The device must be attached to your helmet or with the chest-style mounts. No selfie sticks, no wrist mounts are allowed. We are not responsible for the safety of your equipment and you may not attach anything to the Segway. You must make sure your camera is attached appropriately and safely. Also, you may only film the tour portion of your experience. You may not film or document any portion of the training.

What about coupons?

If you have a coupon, there will be a code associated with that coupon. You can enter that code into your booking page on our website. The system will automatically calculate the discount. If you have any trouble entering a code, feel free to call our booking line at: 800-975-3177

Do your coupons have restrictions?

Coupons are not transferable. Valid only for the Segway tour up to five people. Not valid for “Fun & Tasty Add-ons.” May be used for any of our locations. Not valid for specialty tours, large group tours or on-site events. One coupon per person/per tour. Other restrictions apply. Please call with additional questions .

What about Gratuities?

Typically tour guides are compensated with gratuities if you feel the tour was well guided and you had a positive experience. It is customary to tip, but the amount is completely up to you. We strive to give you a unique and fun experience and we hope you enjoy all that EGT has to offer. If you are participating in a specialty add-on, please note that most of these events are provided by our partners. Customary gratuity is appreciated in services businesses. Please keep this in mind when you patronize business other than EGT.

What about weather?

Segways are water resistant, some humans are not. We still offer tours if it is damp or there is a light rain. We even provide a FREE rain poncho should it begin to rain during any tour. If the weather becomes inclement, (thunder & lightening) we will have to cancel or discontinue the tour, and your tour will be rescheduled.  PLEASE NOTE: Our tours will commence unless we notify YOU of inclement weather. Just because it may be raining where you are, the weather may be just fine in the area of the tour. Cancellation fees apply if you choose to change or cancel inside of our cancellation times.

What is a specialty tour?

Specialty tours are our customized and often times private Segway tour events. Pick a destination and we’ll bring the Segways  to you, train you and your group on-site and simply “host” the event. If you’ve got a favorite place you’d like to experience while riding a Segway PT, we will build a custom package to suit your needs. Having a party? Why not host it with a Segway tour experience? We can handle large groups. Choose a number of machines and we’ll bring them to your event with our Segway Tour Specialists who will provide complete training and safety education for your group, party or event. Customized and private events are available 7-days a week and can include anything from food to cigars to special team building exercises that are fun for all ages. Drop us an e-mail and tell us what you’d like to do and we’ll set up an experience you’ll never forget!

How long do the tours last?

Tours can vary in length and depend on which package you choose. The tours that run in Ybor City are 2 hours. If you’ve chosen one of our “Fun & Tasty Add-ons” then please allow for more time. If you choose an add-on before your tour, please arrive at the Segway Launch Pad 20 minutes before your scheduled time. If you”re doing an add-on after the tour, feel free to stay as long as you like. (Or as long as they’ll allow you to stay) If you’ve chosen the wine tasting event following the Segway tour, you can hang out in the wine bar through the evening if you wish.

Before you arrive, you must watch the SEGWAY SAFETY VIDEO.
